When a family starts looking for help at home, the words get confusing fast. Home care. Home health. In-home care. Home health aide. Private duty. They sound almost the same, and search results mix them together. It is easy to call one kind of agency expecting the other.
We would rather you know the difference before you pick up the phone. It saves time, it saves frustration, and it helps you find the right help for the person you love.
The short version
Home care is non-medical help with everyday life at home: company, personal care, meals, rides, and a hand with the household.
Home health usually means skilled clinical care at home from licensed professionals such as nurses or therapists.
Haven of Heart Homecare provides home care. We do not provide home health.
What home care looks like
Home care is about the daily rhythm of life. It helps someone stay in the home they love, safely and with dignity, by filling in the parts of the day that have become harder. At Haven, that includes:
- Companion care. Conversation, reading, games, walks together, and light household tasks like laundry and mail.
- Personal care. Hands-on help with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and moving around the house.
- Meal preparation. Grocery shopping, cooking, and kitchen cleanup, shaped by the person’s preferences and family guidance.
- Rides and errands. Getting to appointments, the pharmacy, the grocery store, and social outings.
- Support after a hospital stay. Medication reminders, mobility help, light housekeeping, meals, and coordination with medical providers while recovery continues under the person’s own medical team.
- Cognitive engagement. Puzzles, music, reminiscing, art, and outings that keep the mind active and the day connected.
- Respite for family caregivers. A trusted caregiver steps in so a spouse or adult child can rest or handle their own responsibilities.
All of this is non-medical. Our caregivers do not diagnose, treat, or replace the person’s doctors.
What home health usually looks like
Home health generally refers to clinical services delivered in the home by licensed professionals. Depending on the situation, that might involve a nurse checking on a wound or managing medications, or a physical, occupational, or speech therapist working on recovery goals. It is typically arranged with the person’s medical team and tied to a specific health need.
Haven does not provide nursing, wound care, injections, medication administration, or physical, occupational, or speech therapy. If your loved one needs those services, their doctor or hospital care team is the right place to start.
Why the words get mixed up
Part of the confusion is simply language. “Home” and “care” appear in both. Some agencies offer both kinds of service, and some job titles overlap. A person can also need both at once: a nurse visiting for a clinical need and a home care caregiver helping with meals, bathing, and company the rest of the week. The two can sit side by side, each doing its own part.
A quick way to tell what you need
These questions can help sort it out before you call anyone:
- Is the main need medical? Wound care, injections, therapy exercises, or clinical monitoring point toward home health and the person’s medical team.
- Is the main need daily living? Help getting dressed, a hot meal, a ride to the store, someone to talk to, or a few hours so you can rest point toward home care.
- Is the main worry that Mom is alone too much? That is home care territory.
- Did a doctor say skilled care is needed? Ask the doctor’s office or hospital team what kind of service they mean.
If you are still not sure, that is fine. The person’s doctor or care team can explain what kind of service they have in mind.
About paying for care
Haven of Heart Homecare serves private-pay clients. Coverage rules for home health and other services vary, and we are not the right source for insurance or benefit questions. If you are wondering what a plan covers, ask the plan directly or talk with the person’s care team.
What to expect when you call Haven
When you call us, you are calling a non-medical home care agency based in Holyoke, serving families across Hampden, Hampshire, Franklin, and Berkshire counties. We will ask about daily life: what a typical day looks like, where help would make the biggest difference, and what matters most to your loved one. Care plans are built with the client and family, around the person rather than a checklist.
Nursing and therapy are not Haven services, and questions about clinical care belong with your loved one’s doctor or care team. If the need is help with daily life, we are glad to talk about what non-medical home care could look like.
